Much awaited festivities

For a place that has little shops to boost, a two week long carnival for the residents of Orangi Town no 10 came as a delight.

Starting from Chand Raat on 24 July, it’ll remain active till the 9 July. Having accessories, games and rides and plenty food stalls, the mela manages to draw out a minimum 300 crowd every day and engage people from all age groups.

Be it the Tallman’s uniquely filmy style of interaction, the numerous food stalls which had ice cream and fast food other than the usual mela food with chaat and cholas, or the maddening games, people indulge themselves here with their families and spend time for hours.

Interestingly other than your run of the mill scary spot as the ghost corner, the mela also has its own zoo with snakes, rabbits, and birds at display for the children.

But the show stealer was Maut ka kunwa’n, a fear factor ride where motor cyslists and some car drivers drove their vehicles at various difficult spots set up the organizers while stunting.

The main idea of the organizers, who were social workers in the area, behind this carnival at such an underprivileged place in the city was to allow the children and the families of the area to have an affordable escape of some sorts from their daily grinds of sweat and tensions.

The attendance and the beautifully colorful picture the mela has been painting for the past week for its residents has us declaring it a great success.
