Enjoying the three ingredients of life

By Mahima Sultan Ali

Living in a developing country with half of all its nation's adult men and two-thirds of women as illiterate, imagine the surprise on finding someone around you who does not let their thirst for knowledge simmer down with age.

We have all heard people say that there is no age limit to learning but the extremely demanding and stifling lives in our society hardly allows for such gutsy moves, especially in case of women here.

Hameeda Faiz, 48 years old, is a resident from Baldia Town who passed her matriculation exams in 2016.

Like many women in south Asia, she was also married at a young age who had to forsake studies to diligently handle her domestic life.

Mother of 6 children, 2 already married, she had been actively working for NGOs as field mobilizer due to her socializing skills. She soon understood not knowing in this age is a serious disadvantage.

She was apprehensive about the mockery she may face but was delighted that after initial shocked reactions, her fellows, much younger than her, helped her out in any way they could.

She has now taught and landed better opportunities since this endeavor. She has firmly set her mind to spice her life with the three most important ingredients of good life: learning, earning and yearning.
